Eleanor Constance Greenham was the first native-born Queensland woman to graduate medicine. When Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School opened in 1892 Eleanor Greenham was the first student enrolled. She excelled academically, winning the school Science medal in 1892, passing Senior in 1895 and gaining the Botany Medal.

Eleanor Greenham graduated in medicine from the University of Sydney in 1901. She was employed as a resident medical officer at the Lady Bowen in Brisbane and was possibly the first woman to receive a residential position in a Queensland hospital. In 1903 she established her own private practice in Brisbane. Dr Greenham attracted a reputation as a skilful and caring doctor.

Eleanor Greeham paved he way for other Queensland women in the field of medicine. In recognition of her outstanding contribution she was granted honorary membership to the Queensland Medical Women’s Society in 1945 and was made an honorary member of the British Medical Association (Queensland Branch) in 1953 for her 50 years of uninterrupted membership.
