Miss Estelle Cribb (1877 - 1947)
2014 Inductee
Student 1892 - 1894; Teacher 1903 - 1938
Miss Estelle Cribb was a first day pupil at Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School (IGGS) in 1892 and, after three years, attended the Sydney University where she gained her Master of Arts, with honours in Mathematics. Miss Cribb was the first woman to take an MA degree in Mathematics at the University and she occupied the position of Tutor in Mathematics during the latter part of her degree. She then attended a training school for teachers and took an Honours Diploma in Education. In 1903, Miss Cribb was appointed Mathematics Mistress at IGGS. She retired in 1938, following 35 years of service to the School.
In her retirement, Miss Cribb continued her interest in the School and was an active member of the IGGS Old Girls Association, serving as President for 12 years. She was much loved and, in 1952, commemorative gates were unveiled at the front of IGGS in her honour. These gates were provided through a memorial fund established by the OGA after her death in 1947.
Miss Fanny Hunt, the first Head Mistress of IGGS from 1891 to 1901, described Miss Cribb as a diligent and industrious pupil, and one of the best scholars the School ever had.
