Professor Veronica James began teaching at Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School as a Senior Mathematics Mistress in 1965. She later began a distinguished university career as Senior Tutor, School of Physics, progressing to Associate Professor at UNSW. She has been Visiing Fellow, Research School of Chemistry ANU, Visiting Fellow, Department of Pathology UQA, and Adjunct Professor, Research School of Chemistry ANU. In 1996, Professor James was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for her service to the deaf.
Professor James has worked on Breast Cancer research since the 1980s and developed Fibre Diffraction Diagnosis, a method to detect cancer using x-rays of nail clippings or skin. Her research also embraces other forms of cancer including colon, renal, prostate, ovarian, lung and melanoma. Her work has been recognised with many major scientific awards. She was named Woman of the Year in 1999 by the American Biologial Institute and received the International Scientist of the Year 2004 Medal from IBC Cambridge.
